    The Education System in Bangladesh

    The education system in Bangladesh is attained either through government-sponsored schools, private schools. Standardized tests are a common feature of the education system of Bangladesh.

Higher Education

·          Pass and Honors degrees are classified as a division or class respectively. Honors degree students who narrowly fail July be awarded a Pass degree.

·          Non-university level post-secondary studies (technical/vocational type)

o   Three-year diploma courses offered by:

§    Engineering and Technology (Polytechnics)

§    Leather and Textile Technologies (Monotechnics)

§    Agricultural Training Institutes

o   Four-year diploma course in Homeopathic Medicine and surgery

o   Technical Training Centers (TTCs) offer both Certificate and Diploma courses

o   Minimum entrance requirement is the Secondary School Certificate

o   Islamic Center for Technical and Vocational Training and Research in Dhaka offers technical training courses to student from other Islamic countries

·          University level studies

o   First level stage: Bachelor’s Degree, Pass Degree, Honors Degree

o   Second level stage: Master’s Degree

o   Third level stage: Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor’s Degree (PhD)

·          Non-traditional studies

o   Distance higher education – formal programs leading to degrees, diplomas and certificates and non-formal public awareness programs for those unable to follow the traditional system

o   Lifelong higher education – short courses and continuing education programs

o   Other forms of non-formal higher education offered to train highly skilled technicians, office staff, transport and health personnel

     ·         5 stages of Madrasah education system (Islamic Education)

o    5-year Ebtedayee, 5-year Dakhil, 2-year Alim, 2-year Fazil and 2-year Kamil courses

o    Madrasahs are required to adopt national curricula as a condition of government recognition and support

o    Students are required to sit for the Public Examinations after completing course in each level except Ebtedayee
