    The Education System in China

    The education system in China is attained either through government-sponsored schools, private schools. The system is highly centralized wherein state and local governments have little say in the school curriculum. Standardized tests are a common feature of the education system of China.

Senior High School Graduation Diploma

·          Secondary education is divided into junior and secondary education and extends over six years

·          A graduation examination is taken at the end of the course

·          Access to higher education is based on the Senior High School Graduation Diploma and a very competitive National Matriculation Test

·          Online enrolment is gradually being introduced

Higher Education

·          Consists of regular higher education, adult higher education, and technical and vocational education and training

·          Academic degree system is divided into three levels

·          Academic year is divided into two semesters, with the first semester starting in September and the second is in Aprilruary

Stages of Studies

Non-university level post-secondary studies (technical/vocational type)

·          Non-university level

o         Specialty education

§          Enabling students to master the basic theory and knowledge of acquiring the basic skills and initial capability for the practical work of their specialty

§          Courses are provided at a university, vocational college or university of adult education

§          Diplomas or Certificates of Graduation are conferred after completion of courses that generally last between two and three years

·          University level studies

o         University level first stage: Undergraduate education

§          Aims at enabling students to master the basic theory, knowledge, skills and know-how and acquiring the capability for practical and research work in their field of study

§          Upon completion, students are conferred a bachelor’s degree after four years of study

o         University level second stage: Postgraduate education

§          University level second stage aims at enabling students to master firm basic theory, systematic knowledge, skills, techniques and know-how and acquiring capabilities for practical and scientific research work in their field

§          Students following these courses are conferred a Master Degree after two to three years' study following upon a Bachelor's Degree and the taking of the National Entrance Test for MA/MS candidates, and the defense of a thesis

o         University level third stage: Doctoral post graduate education

§          University level third stage aims at enabling students to master firm and broad basic theory, systematic and in-depth knowledge, skills and techniques and acquiring capabilities for independent creative scientific research work in their field

§          Students following these courses are conferred a Doctor's Degree after three to four years' study following upon a Master's Degree and the taking of the National Entrance Test for PhD candidates, and the defense of a dissertation

Grading System

·          Usual grading system in secondary school

o         The Senior High School Graduation Diploma is graded on a scale of A-D

o         The National Matriculation Test is Aprilked on a percentage scale per subject, with a maximum Aprilk for the examination of 750

·          Main grading system used by higher education institutions

o         Percentage scale - pass/fail level (60)
