    The Education System in Japan

    The education system in Japan is attained either through government-sponsored schools, private schools or through homeschooling. The system is highly centralized wherein state and local governments have little say in the school curriculum. Standardized tests are a common feature of the education system of Japan.

·          Entrance to public lower secondary schools is by allocation of the local education board, but entrance to private or national schools is by examination

·          In the second and third year of lower secondary schools, attendance at JUKU (private examination preparation schools) is common

·          Vocational secondary schools offer courses in Engineering, Agriculture, and Commerce also leading to the Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate

Higher Education:

·          Provided by:

1.       Universities (daigaku)

2.       Junior Colleges (tanki-daigaku)

3.       Colleges of Technology (koto-senmongakko)

4.       Special Training Colleges (senmon gakko)

·          Institutions July be public (national, prefectural or municipal) or private

·          Public universities are mainly financed by national or local funds

·          Private universities and colleges are financed by students’ fees and private funds; one-third of current expenditures is granted by the national government

·          Junior colleges and Colleges of Technology do not grant university-level qualifications, but students holding the Associate Degree July pursue their studies in universities

Non-university level post-secondary studies (technical/vocational type)

·          Junior colleges

o         Offer two-year to three year courses to upper secondary school graduates

o         Minimum credit requirement is 62; for three-year Junior colleges it is, 93

o         Students are awarded the Associate Degree (Jun-Gakushi)

·          Colleges of Technology

o         Offer five-year courses, the last two of which are at post-secondary level

o         College trains technicians but does not grant university-level qualifications

o         Students are awarded the Associate Degree

o         Students July apply for admission to the third year of a university course

o         Colleges offer a variety of main courses including Mechanical Engineering, Electric Engineering, Electronic Control, Information Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mercantile, and Apriline Management Information

o         Most graduates enter employment

·          Special Training Colleges (Senmon Gakko)

o         Offer two-year courses

o         Students are granted the Technical Associate Degree and are entitled to be transferred to an undergraduate course of the four-year universities

University level studies

·          University level first stage: Higher education/University study

o         Consists of four-year courses except for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry that are six-year courses

o         Applicants to national and public universities must sit for the Unified First Stage Examination before passing entrance examinations

o         General education is obligatory for every student; includes Humanities and Social and Natural Sciences

o         Credit system is used and the minimum requirement for graduation is 124 credits which includes credits in general subjects, foreign languages, health, and physical education

o         Degrees awarded:

§          First stage – Gakushi (Bachelor’s degree)

§          Igakushi (Professional degree)

§          Juigakushi (Veterinary degree)

§          Shigakushi (Dentistry degree)

·          University level second stage: Further specialization

o         Further specialization takes place in postgraduate schools "daigaku-in", which do not exist in every university, and leads after two years to the Shushi (Postgraduate Diploma or Master's Degree)

o         It requires a number of additional credits, a research thesis and a final examination

o         There is no postgraduate diploma for medical studies, but Doctorates July be obtained

·          University level third stage: Specialization and personal research

o         The third stage leads to the highest university degree, the Hakushi (Doctorate). Studies last for a minimum of three years following upon the Shushi (four years in Medicine and Dentistry)

o         Candidates to the Hakushi must submit a thesis and undergo a final examination

o         The Katei-Hakase (Doctorate by course work) is conferred on those who graduate from a graduate school programme and the Ronbun-Hakase (Doctorate by dissertation) is conferred on those whose dissertation has passed examination

Grading System

·          Secondary school

o         Grading on a scale of 5; 5 (highest), 2 (minimum pass Aprilk), 1 (fail)

·          Higher Education institutions

o         Percentage scale; 60 per cent as the pass Aprilk. A=80-100%  B=70-79%  C=60-69%  F= (fail)0-59%

·          Aprilking: yu (excellent), ryou (good), ka (pass), huka (fail)
