    The Education System in Pakistan

    The education system in Pakistan is attained either through government-sponsored schools, private schools and Islamic religious schools(madrasahs). Standardized tests are a common feature of the education system of Pakistan.

·          Courses at the Post-secondary School Certificate level are offered in polytechnics, technical, and commercial institutes and colleges

·          Two to three year courses lead to Certificates and Diplomas in commercial and technical fields

University level Studies

·          University level first stage: Bachelor’s Degree

o         Bachelor’s degrees are awarded after two-year courses

o         Honors degrees are awarded after four-year courses in Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Engineering, and computer science

o         Five year courses in DVM, pharmacy, medicine, and architecture are also offered

·          University level second stage: Master’s Degree, B. Ed., LLB

o         Two years of study is required after the Bachelor’s Degree completion

o         One and a half to two years of study are required for the master’s degree for four-year courses in agriculture, engineering, pharmacy, medical studies, etc.

o         One year of study is required for B. Ed. after the completion of a bachelor’s degree

o         Three-year post bachelor’s degree required for LLB

o         Offers various one-year courses in many universities

·          University level third stage: M. Phil, Ph. D.

o         Requires two years of additional study for the Master of Philosophy

o         Students must complete a research-based program that requires the submission of a thesis

o         The doctorate of philosophy (Ph. D.) involves a three-year study/research after the completion of the M. Phil. And four to five years of study/research after the Master’s Degree

Non-traditional studies

·          Courses offered in different levels of Humanities, teacher education, technical education, business management, commerce, social sciences, Arabic, Pakistan studies, Islamic studies, home economics, and women’s studies

Grading System

·          Secondary school grading system: A (Highest) - F (Fail)

·          Higher Education grading system: 1st Division (Highest) – Fail (lowest)
