About Us

    The Education System in Sri Lanka

    The education system in Sri Lanka is attained either through government-sponsored schools, private schools. Standardized tests are a common feature of the education system of Sri Lanka.

    Academic year: Classes are from October to September

    Language of instruction: English, Sinhala, Tamil

    Duration of compulsory education: 5 to 14 years of age 

Level

Age

PriAprily School

For children 5 to 10 years of age

·    Duration of priAprily education lasts for five years

Junior Secondary

For children 11 to 13 years of age

·    Duration of junior secondary education lasts for three years and is compulsory for students up to the age of 14

Senior Secondary

For children 14 to 16 years of age

·    Consists of:

o         Junior Secondary

o         Senior Secondary

o         Collegiate (pre-university) education

·    Provided for by Senior Secondary School

·    Duration of program lasts for 3 years

·    Upon completion, students receive the Sri Lankan GCE O-Level certificate

·    Students must pass in six subjects including mathematics and the mother tongue, Sinhalese or Tamil 

Pre-University

For children 17 to 18 years of age

·    Provided for by Collegiate Course

·    Duration of program lasts for 2 years

·    Upon completion, students receive the Sri Lankan GCE A-Levels

Higher Education

·    Provided by universities, specialized institutions like technical colleges, affiliated technical units, and private institutions

Non-University Level (technical/vocational type)

·    Higher technical studies are offered in polytechnical institutes and technical colleges

·    Courses offered are Engineering, Commerce, Business and Crafts

·    Courses last between one to four years that leads to a diploma or a certificate

·    A higher national diploma is conferred for courses that last for four years at the post-secondary level

University Level

·    University level first stage: Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree

o         Certificates and diplomas are conferred after one to two years

o         Bachelor’s Degree is conferred after three years as a General Degree or as a Special Degree after four years

·    University level second stage: Master’s Degree, M. Phil, Postgraduate Diploma

o         Master’s Degree is obtained after two to three years of further study after the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree

o         M. Phil course normally consists in research

o         Postgraduate diplomas require an additional two years of study after the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree

·    University level third stage: Doctorate

o         Conferred after two to three years of research after the completion of a Master’s Degree and the submission of a thesis

Non-Traditional Studies

Distance Higher Education

·    Provides first and postgraduate degrees and Certificates and diplomas

·    Program is offered at the Open University of Sri Lanka and there are no formal requirements

·    Courses offered include Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Engineering Technology

Other forms of non-formal higher education

·    Consists of an extensive six-month program that is conducted at school centers

·    Adult literacy classes are conducted by adult education officers in various fields

·    Courses in technical and commercial fields are conducted by the National Apprenticeship Board
