    The Education System in Taiwan

    The education system in Taiwan is attained either through government-sponsored schools, private schools. Standardized tests are a common feature of the education system of Taiwan.

    Duration of compulsory education

    6 to 15 years of age

    ·          Language of Instruction: Chinese, the study of English is compulsory

    Academic Year: Classes start in August until July

    ·          Students attend either 3-year full time or 4-year evening class courses

    ·          Senior vocational schools offer a more practical education

    ·          Students attend either day or evening courses

    Higher Education

    ·          Provided by both private and public universities, 4-year colleges, and junior colleges

    ·          There are also institutes of technology as well as national and municipal Open Universities

    Non-University level post-secondary studies (technical/vocational type)

    ·          Junior colleges specialize in particular subject areas such as Commerce, Technology, Industry; students are awarded a Diploma after successful completion of the course

    ·          Graduates of Senior Vocational Schools can enter institutes of technology; students must earn at least 128 credits before graduating

    o         Five-year courses for students from junior high schools

    o         Two-year courses for students from senior secondary schools (both types)

    University level studies

    ·          First Stage: Bachelor’s Degree

    o         Bachelor’s Degree courses last for four years except for specialized courses like Medicine

    o         Students must earn a total of 128 credits before graduating

    ·          Second Stage: Master’s Degree

    o         Further specialization leads to a Master’s Degree that requires an additional two years of study following a Bachelor’s Degree

    ·          Third Stage: Specialization and individual research, Doctorate

    o         Leads to the highest university degree, the Doctorate; requires a minimum of two years of further study

    Non-traditional studies

    ·          Distance higher education

    o         Courses are offered at Open Universities: the national and municipality Open Universities

    o         Provides adults with advanced and continuing education through audio-visual media

    o         Students that complete the program requirements are conferred a Bachelor’s Degree

    Lifelong higher education

    ·          Supplementary and continuing education schools composed of six levels: adult basic education, priAprily & junior high supplement education, senior vocational high, junior college, and university continuing education
